Do Christmas Markets in Copenhagen Take Credit Card?
Share
If you are planning a trip to Copenhagen during the Holiday season, you may be curious if you need to have cash on hand to enjoy a warm gløgg at the Christmas Markets.
Cash or Card?
The quick answer is that all of the major Christmas markets in Copenhagen take credit cards, and it is not necessary to have cash. Denmark is a largely cashless society and the vendors at the markets are well equipped to take your payment.
Are there any exceptions?
It's possible that if you go to a smaller, pop up market they may only take cash or "MobilePay" (read below!). These would be markets that are set up by locals where individuals can sell their own crafts-- probably more in suburbs and outlying towns. It would not be the same as the well-established, popular Christmas markets in Copenhagen.
What is "MobilePay"?
MobilePay is not the same thing as phone payments like Apple Pay or Google Wallet. It is a Danish app that allows people to send and receive money to individuals and businesses. It is sort of like a local PayPal, or Venmo and is only available to residents of Denmark, Norway, Finland, and Sweden.

In short, using a debit or credit card should be all you need to enjoy Christmas Markets in Copenhagen. We hope that you enjoy your visit!
